U.S.-European Union rice troubles continue with the announcement that the Rhineland-Palatinate - state in Germany - has found biotech rice from the U.S. in the region. The state's Ministry for the Environment says six of 15 long grain rice samples have tested positive for the LLRice601 strain.
Local authorities are securing products with the biotech content that may already have been delivered to stores. While consumption of the rice does not pose a threat to consumers, there have been calls for more action over this issue.
Last week Bayer - the company that owns the LLRice601 technology - announced it was continuing to look into the source of the rice in samples sent to Europe. Farmers in several U.S. states have filed lawsuits against the company over the issue. Rice prices have dipped as a result of the illegal biotech find.
