Funding for Government Extended Three Days

Senate has to act quickly on longer-term funding to avoid government shutdown.
Compiled by staff
Published: Dec 20, 2010

The Senate approved a three-day continuing resolution providing discretionary funding for government operations at fiscal year 2010 levels Friday night. The continuing resolution the government had been operating under was set to expire Saturday. The bill had been approved by the House earlier in the day and provides continued funding to prevent a government shut-down while the Senate completes consideration of a longer-term continuing resolution.

The Senate was trying to move an omnibus bill, but problems led Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to drop the bill Thursday. Part of the problem with the $1.2 trillion spending measure was the $8 billion worth of earmarks. A $1.2 trillion bill approved by the House last week did not contain earmarks, but Reid said Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., had indicated Republican members would not support the package. McConnell had proposed keeping the government running at current funding levels through Feb. 18.
