FSA Offices to Stay Open - For Now

Top administrator says closing orders won't come from federal office.

FSA won't close 700 FSA offices nationwide. But restructuring will continue due to budget cuts, says Teresa Lasseter, FSA administrator. She spoke at the North American Grains Conference Monday.

FSA will ask state offices to submit restructuring plans to make FSA more efficient, she says.

Clearly, some offices need to close because they the number of the farms in their county has declined so dramatically. Some FSA only have one of two people. Others have so few people that employees can't ever take any time office. Some small offices don't have their own manager, but share a manager with another county.

To lessen the inconvenience for farmers affected who lose the FSA office in their counties, FSA plans to allow them to enroll in offices nearest them rather than in one designated by FSA, she adds.
