Foreign Holdings of Agricultural Land Increase

USDA's annual report on foreign ownership of ag land released.

According to the annual report on foreign holdings of U.S. agricultural land, as of Feb. 28, 2008 1.6% of all privately held land and 0.92% of all land in the U.S. is partially or completely owned by foreigners. This is an increase of 1.4 million acres since 2007.

 

In the statistical breakdown, most of the land owned by foreign interests is forest with pasture land coming in second. The countries that own the most U.S. ag land are the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Germany.

 

With 3.35 million acres of foreign holdings, Maine leads the nation in foreign ownership with 18.7% of agricultural land. Hawaii is second with 8.8% followed by Washington, Nevada and Alabama.
