In response to the rising cost of fish meal the U.S. Grains Council reports Japan is experimenting with U.S. distiller's dried grains with solubles as a feed ingredient for rainbow trout. The trials use high-protein DDGS with about 20% of the total feed partially replacing fish meal and soybean meal. Preliminary results suggest no positive or negative influence when compared to rations using fish meal and soybean meal minus DDGS. The experiment, which started in April, will continue through the summer with findings presented in September.
The Japan Trout Farmers Association heard about DDGS five years ago and started researching how to use it in aquaculture with the help of the Grains Council. The Grains Council says the DDGS market for rainbow trout in Japan will not be as large as markets of other animal sectors, but the basic findings of this trial will have an impact on the larger seafood market as a whole.
Additionally, Japan's livestock industry also uses fish meal in compound feed for layers, broilers and swine. Given concern about the expense and supply of fish meal, the livestock sector will closely review the findings of this trial.
