With support from across the aisle, Senate Democrats now believe they have the votes lined up to move the financial services overhaul legislation. Senators Susan Collins, R-Maine and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine and Scott Brown, R-Mass., say they will vote for the measure. Senator Ben Nelson, D-Neb., is the last Democrat to back the conference report. Banking Committee Chair Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., says the question no longer is whether the far-reaching bill will pass in the Senate, but when.
When word reached the White House that 60 votes had been secured, President Obama hailed the breakthrough on the bill. He said this reform is good for families, good for businesses and good for the entire economy. He's urging the Senate to act quickly so he can sign it into law next week.
