Financial Overhaul Up for Discussion in Senate

Both parties not toeing the line that leadership is asking for.

As financial industry overhaul is headed to the Senate floor this week, posturing has begun. Members of both parties seem to be willing to break rank with their party leaders and that has those leaders worried. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wants GOP senators to sign a letter pledging their support for a filibuster against a motion to bring up the legislation.

Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, is resisting even though she says she opposes the bill. Her vote could be the 60th that Democrats will need to advance the legislation. Others, including Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and Ted Kaufman, D-Del., say they want to amend the legislation. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has indicated that the partisan rancor will not deter him. He says it's time to bring it to the floor and let Senators debate it.
