FF Extra: What Kind of Farmer are You?

Use our spreadsheet to see where you rank in sustainable farming practices.
Bryce Knorr
Published: Jul 15, 2011

Farm Futures surveyed more than 1,000 farmers to find out more about their practices and attitudes about sustainable agriculture. This exclusive research found five basic types of producers - Green and Gold, Green and Gray, Black and Red, Big and Brown or an Average Joe.

The survey asks about a range of practices in your operation from written conservation plans, to types of tillage. The wide range of topics covered in this short survey - it takes just a few minutes to complete - help paint an accurate picture of your operation.

By filling the appropriate number for each practice it's possible to quantify your approach to sustainability. This self-administered quiz (download the Excel spreadsheet using the link below), can also let you alter the numbers to see how it impacts your sustainability rating. Fill it out the first time as accurately as possible; then alter different factors to learn what practice changes you can make to your business to improve your sustainability quotient.

Senior Editor Bryce Knorr first joined Farm Futures Magazine in 1987. In addition to analyzing and writing about the commodity markets, he is a former futures introducing broker and is a registered Commodity Trading Advisor. He conducts Farm Futures exclusive surveys on acreage, production and management issues and is one of the analysts regularly contracted by business wire services before major USDA crop reports. Besides the Morning Call on www.FarmFutures.com he writes weekly reviews for corn, soybeans, and wheat that include selling price targets, charts and seasonal trends. His other weekly reviews on basis, energy, fertilizer and financial markets and feature price forecasts for key crop inputs. A journalist with 38 years of experience, he received the Master Writers Award from the American Agricultural Editors Association.

Using the link below, download the Excel spreadsheet and fill it in to find out how you rate. Results appear on under the second tab (check the bottom of the page) after you've updated the data.
