With many farmers postponing final planting decisions until after Tuesday's USDA acreage survey, fertilizer prices were mixed on wholesale and international markets this week.
Ammonia prices rose $10 out of the Gulf to $288, moving $12.50 a ton higher out of the Black Sea. Normally, these prices would suggest a farmgate price between $470 and $500 a ton, which a few farmers have been lucky enough to get recently. However, most retail prices in the Midwest remain sharply higher due to inventory bought by dealers last fall.
Natural gas prices in the U.S. indicate farmgate prices should be even lower — around $350 a ton.
