The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday that the E. coli outbreak from fresh spinach was caused by crops raised in three California counties - Monterey, San Benito and Santa Clara. The agency notes that spinach grown in the rest of the United States has not been implicated in the current outbreak.
In addition, other produce grown in the three counties has not be implicated in this outbreak. And processed spinach is not implicated in the outbreak.
The tally of people who have become ill from the outbreak has risen to 173 over the weekend. Investigators are working to narrow the area implicated in the current outbreak even further.
The only challenge for consumers is knowing the origin of the spinach they buy. According to wire reports, states that produce their own fresh spinach are hard at work getting the word out about this latest FDA information. For example, in New Jersey, the state will work to promote the "Jersey Fresh" branding program for that state's fresh spinach.
