The Food and Drug Administration reports its director of food safety is leaving the agency for an academic post. Stephen Sundlof, who has been with FDA 16 years, will join the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. He will remain available to the FDA Foods Program as a senior adviser. Michael Landa will serve as acting director.
Sundlof has served as director of the Center for Food, Safety and applied Nutrition since January, 2008. He led the center's development and implementation of programs and policies related to the composition, quality, safety, and labeling of foods, food and color additives, dietary supplements, and cosmetics.
As of next Monday Sundlof will begin guiding a new training and development program in regulatory science in conjunction with the University of Minnesota and the Ohio State University. He will be designing a curriculum for certification and master's degrees designed especially for government employees.
