Farmers Have Less Time to Signup for DCP Program

Because of the delay in the Farm Bill, farmers must signup in next three months.

The Farm Service Agency has begun signing farmers up for the direct and counter cyclical programs. FSA Deputy Administrator John Johnson says that the timeframe for producers to sign up for the program this year has been compressed quite a bit.

"Typically we start signup for DCP on October 1 and it runs until September 30; a full year," says Johnson. "But because of the late passage of the Farm Bill this year we weren't able to start signup until we had that legislation in place. And then it made some minor changes to the 2008 program which we had to make some software adjustments for, but we have that done."

Signup began not quite a month after the Farm Bill was finalized. Eligible producers should contact their local FSA office as soon as possible to signup. Because of the short signup period this year the usual late signup fee is being waived.

Johnson says any producers who elect to receive an advance payment from the program should begin seeing checks sometime before the end of July.
