Farm Futures See Corn Acres Down 3%

Projections are lower across the board except for soybeans.

Published: Jun 24, 2009

A wet spring that kept farmers out of the fields could result in the loss of some 2.5 million acres of corn, according to new Farm Futures estimates.

Based on results of an exclusive online survey and other data, Farm Futures puts 2009 corn plantings at 82.47 million acres, 3% less than March intentions reported by USDA.

Spring wheat acres are also lower, off 3.6% to 12.86 million, resulting in a 1% drop in total wheat plantings for 2009.

Many of the lost acres will wind up in soybeans, though final estimates of seedings remain in flux due to ongoing wet conditions in Illinois and Indiana. Farm Futures estimates bean acres will be up 4.7% to 79.63 million, due to acreage shifts and additional plantings lured into production by high prices in May and June.

USDA updates its estimates of June 1 stocks and acreage on Tuesday, June 30. Some 480 farmers reported acreage to Farm Futures from June 11 to 23.
