Farm Bill Goes Nowhere

Senate accomplishes very little in first week of floor action.
Jason Vance
Published: Nov 12, 2007

Before the Senate adjourned Friday for a three-day Veteran's Day weekend, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., expressed disappointment that so little had been accomplished on the Farm Bill and expressed the opinion that the week had been wasted. The major stumbling block to getting anywhere on the Farm Bill was the fight over Reid's attempt to limit amendments to items pertinent to agriculture.

However; acting Ag Secretary Chuck Conner says the bill can be completed in short order, but is calling for more reform in the bill. He says the effort by Senators Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., to place a hard cap of $250,000 on farm payments is definitely a step forward, that alone is not enough to lift the administration's threat of a veto.

Action on the Farm Bill will begin again on Tuesday when the Senate resumes following the holiday weekend.
