The Senate passed the Farm Bill by a margin of 81 to 15 on Thursday. The Farm Bill has seen unprecedented support from more than 500 wide ranging groups and organizations.
"The Senate's vote demonstrates the broad support the 2008 Farm Bill has across the country," National Farmers Union President Tom Buis says. "It's taken two years to get to this point and while no piece of legislation is ever perfect this is a good bill and I am pleased to see such overwhelming support in Congress."
American Farm Bureau Federation President Bob Stallman praised lawmakers saying the bill strikes a key balance providing support for programs that benefit all Americans.
"Farm bills are most important in bad times," Stallman says. "And given the cyclical nature of agriculture and the vagaries of weather, American farmers and ranchers need a basic, no-frills safety net in place to fall back on as they work to provide food and fuel for the U.S. and the world."
Both Buis and Stallman expressed disappointment in President Bush's intention of vetoing the Farm Bill. However both Wednesday's vote in the House and Thursday's in the Senate are much more than the two-thirds majority needed to override a Presidential veto.
