Fruit and vegetable growers had not been happy about their place in the House Agriculture Committee's 2007 Farm Bill proposals, but committee leaders decided Tuesday to give hundreds of millions of dollars for specialty crop grants, research, conservation and produce purchases.
Although the official numbers aren't in yet, thanks to a tricky budget situation, early estimates put specialty crop money in the bill at $1.6 billion - about twice what Peterson had previously proposed.
The draft also imposes new limits on individual payments, capping eligibility at an adjusted gross income of $1 million.
