Farm Bill Debate Finally Underway

Long awaited movement forward on the Farm Bill.

Published: Dec 10, 2007

With the Senate agreeing to 20 amendments to the farm bill for each side of the aisle, debate began Friday. Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., introduced an amendment to tighten adjusted gross income eligibility limits for subsidies under the farm bill. Senate Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., took to the floor in opposition of the amendment, saying it would jeopardize the agriculture safety net.

"An unreasonable AGI test would make U.S. farm policy unpredictable, inequitable, and punitive for thousands of American farm and ranch families," Chambliss said.

Debate on the farm bill will continue Monday afternoon, although no votes will be allowed until Tuesday. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., says the Senate is going to finish the farm bill before they leave Washington. According to staff of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the goal is to complete the farm bill by the end of the week.
