Farmers who haven't locked in fall fertilizer needs could pay sharply higher prices, following a big increase in forward prices out of the Gulf this week.
Wholesale prices for fall delivery were up $35 to $40 a ton, which could raise the price farmers pay to $500. Spot market prices and the latest USDA survey of Illinois costs put the price around $435.
A rebound in world demand has more nitrogen fertilizer moving internationally.
