Faces of Traditional Ethiopia

An intimate portrait of the people of rural Africa

In March of 2009 I was in Ethiopia with a team from the Foods Resource Bank, an NGO (Non-Government organization) focusing on food security in the developing world.

Fueling the family fire

Half of Ethiopians are members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Here an Ethiopian Orthodox Priest stands in front of Yemrehanna, Kristos church in BilBilla. The church dates back to the 11th or 12th century.

Access to water
In Ethiopia, water is often transported in containers rather than pipes. Here children use a donkey cart with a 55-gal. barrel to carry water, near Meki.

A cool head
Not only a cultural symbol but also a practical adaptation, this farmer's turban protects his head from the harsh Sub-Saharan sun.

We traveled widely, interacting with a cross-section of people representing Ethiopian agribusiness, the commodities exchanges, other NGOs and smallholder farmers in villages far from the city.

The photos that follow were made in rural areas where the onslaught of the 21^st century has not yet wiped out all traces of what make Ethiopia and her people unique.
