Extension Looked at in House

Views differ on a farm bill extension.

Representative Jerry Moran, R-Kan., introduced a measure last Thursday to extend the 2002 Farm Bill until Sept. 30, 2008 that was co-sponsored by 23 other members of Congress. With Friday's failure to invoke cloture in the Senate, he says there is no alternative and some form of an extension will have to be passed.

House Agriculture Committee Chair Colin Peterson, D-Minn., says that even with the failure to limit debate in the Senate an extension at this time is not a good idea.

"I think it's a bad idea to be even talking about it," Peterson says. "Because if we end up with any kind of extension I think we're going to lose momentum and once that happens, we're probably going to be dead in the water until after the next Presidential election."

Moran and Peterson delivered their remarks on Friday to the National Association of Farm Broadcasters Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
