Extending Current Farm Bill May Happen

The idea of extending the 2002 Farm Bill comes up again.

Published: Nov 13, 2007

Last week as the Senate Farm Bill ran into a logjam, several Senators floated the notion that an extension of the 2002 Farm Bill may be necessary. The continuing resolution that extended the provisions of the Farm Bill while Congress works on the new one expires Nov. 16. Senator John Thune, R-S.D., says that another continuing resolution will be needed.

"That would mean passing temporary extensions of some of the Farm Bill provisions," Thune says. "I suspect it would be very possible at that point that we not just pass a temporary extension, but some sort of long term extension that would take us into next year."

Senator Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, says that while an extension is a possibility, there is still a good chance of completing a bill by the end of the year. He says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has decided to call the members back to Washington for a session in December after the Thanksgiving recess.
