E-Verify Program Still Alive

Amendment would require employers to check all employees.
Compiled by staff
Published: Sep 24, 2009

The E-Verify program is very much alive in Congress. The program would allow employers to check the work status of their employees electronically. E-Verify is designed to help employers stay within the law by hiring people who are legally in this country. E-Verify has been included as an amendment to the Senate's Homeland Security Appropriations bill.

The amendment, written by Senator Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, requires an employer who elects to check all workers to notify the Secretary of Homeland Security that they plan to verify their existing workforce. The employer would then have ten days to check all workers. Grassley says this short time period would prevent employers from targeting certain workers by claiming that they are still working on verifying the remainder of their workforce. If an employer wishes to check existing workers, then they must check them all.
