Trade issues between the European Union and the United States are the main topic of discussion this week as several U.S. Senators visit Spain, Turkey, Morocco and the Czech Republic.
Senator Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, says he is focusing on impediments to U.S. exports of beef and pork as well as biotech regulations that keep most U.S. corn exports out of EU countries. Grassley told reporters Tuesday that so far the U.S. Farm Bill has not been discussed, although he expects questions about it at some point.
"My answer to that is, when we get market opening, we're going to adjust our farm program to be WTO compliant," Grassley says. "I'm going to give them plenty of examples of how we have met WTO requirements when our present policy did not meet them."
