European Officials Say Illegal Biotech Rice Not a Risk to Animals, People

Rice is being recalled, but consumers or animals that may have already eaten the food should not worry.

Unapproved biotech rise that made its way into the food system in Europe is not a health risk for consumers or animals, according to European officials. Over the weekend, the EU executive told Associated Press that the unapproved biotech rice, which came from the United States and China, was unlikely to pose a safety concern.

Last week, the commission reported that 33 of 162 samples of rice imports contained the illegal biotech strain - LL Rice 601 - developed by Bayer CropScience.

Anti-biotech groups are also testing rice and Greenpeace reported last week it found evidence of the tainted rice in German supermarkets. It also says it found biotech rice coming from China.

While consumers should not worry about the potential consumption of the rice, officials are working to track down loads of the crop to keep it out of the food supply.
