President George W. Bush will meet with Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, in Washington on Monday. The daylong discussions will include a variety of topics, including the Doha round of global trade talks, U.S. and EU relations, energy, and climate change, according to the commission.

Barroso's top advisors will accompany him to the U.S., including European Commission Director-General for Trade David O'Sullivan and Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson.

Bush and Barroso last met one-on-one in Washington in October 2005.

The timing of the talks provides a chance for Bush to help the Doha round move forward, as his administration's trade promotion authority ends this summer. The Doha talks broke down last summer due to U.S. and EU policy that protects their farmers but alters trade. Members of the Bush administration, including USDA Secretary Mike Johanns, have emphasized the importance of resuming the Doha talks.
