European Commission approved Monsanto corn rootworm resistant variety for use in animal feed.
The Commission gave a 10-year license to import the corn rootworm resistant variety, called MON 863, only for animal feed use, not for cultivation of the crop or human consumption. The approval came after EU's 25 member states failed to take a decision in June.
Monsanto has also applied for approval for human consumption for the variety. The Associated Press reports that EU governments are expected to vote on this additional application in September. Monsanto can't sell its product until both approvals are secured.
