Ethanol Exports Take Downhill Slide in May

Despite slide from April, exports are on pace to set new record.

Published: Jul 14, 2010

Ethanol exports took a plunge in May, falling 58% from April's 40.8 million gallons in exports. Denatured ethanol exports were 11.2 million gallons in May while un-denatured, non-beverage ethanol exports were 5.9 million gallons.

Even though May's numbers didn't look as good as those from months before, the U.S. has exported 25% more ethanol in the first five months of 2010 than all of 2009. This year's exports are already at 141.4 million gallons, meaning the U.S. is heading toward a record year, likely topping 1995 exports that were 197.5 million gallons.

Renewable Fuels Association President Bob Dinneen says America must stop dragging its feet and move aggressively to open up more domestic markets to ethanol. He says fluctuations in unpredictable ethanol export markets highlight the need for more attention on increasing the nation's consumption of domestically produced ethanol.
