Final 2010 export volumes for both ethanol and dried distillers grains with solubles have been released by the federal government. On the DDGS side, American ethanol producers exported a record 9 million metric tons of livestock feed, a 60% increase over 2009. Top five recipients of American DDGS were China, Mexico, Canada, South Korea, and Vietnam.
On the ethanol side, America exported 397 million gallons of ethanol in 2010, a nearly 400% increase over 2009. 68% were denatured gallons most likely destined for foreign fuel markets. The remaining 32% were undenatured gallons, some of which likely was used for industrial purposes other than fuel use. The top five recipients of U.S. ethanol were Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, India, and the United Arab Emirates.
Matt Hartwig of the Renewable Fuels Association says the importance of DDGS to the global feed market cannot be understated. With recent rises in food prices worldwide, many are once again blaming U.S. ethanol production. But, as the RFA points out, ethanol isn't the driving factor behind food prices and the role of DDGS exports is critical to feeding global livestock herds and poultry flocks.
