EPA Will Release Final Rules of Clean Water Act

Regulations for concentrated animal livestock feeding operations last of revisions.
Compiled by staff
Published: Oct 9, 2008

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is expected to soon unveil the last few significant pieces of its comprehensive revisions to the Clean Water Act. Regulations that cover concentrated livestock feeding operations, or CAFOs. Some believe this will be an important development that will have a profound effect on water quality, relative to livestock agriculture.

The full set of regulatory policies is the product of unprecedented negotiations between livestock producers, environmentalists and government regulators, dating back to the Clinton administration. These policies concerning CAFO discharges were revised following a federal court ruling in 2005.

Dave Warner, Director of Communications for the National Pork Producers Council, says U.S. pork producers have worked hard to eliminate the vast majority of their manure discharges and they are firmly committed to meeting these mandated standards and requirements.
