The EPA will hold a public teleconference on Jan. 31 to consider a new, draft report aimed at "recommendations to strengthen science integration for EPA's environmental decisions."
Science integration generally refers to interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approaches to making decisions on complex issues. For instance, integrated watershed management would be the type of multi-faceted issue that could benefit from an integrated scientific approach.
Public comment is open for the teleconference, which is being convened by the EPA's Science Advisory Board. EPA's Science Advisory Board is expected to make recommendations to strengthen the integration of science underpinning EPA's decision making, and board members will discuss the recommendations in the draft report on the teleconference, according to a Federal Register notice.
The EPA's Scientific Advisory Board began studying how well the agency employs scientific integration at the request of former Administrator Stephen Johnson. The work has continued under Administration Lisa Jackson.
Those who wish to participate in the teleconference, which will be held from 1-4 p.m. EST, or make oral or written comments should contact Dr. Angela Nugent, the designated federal officer, by Jan. 26 by email at: nugent.angela@epa.gov.
The Science Advisory Board's draft report is online at: yosemite.epa.gov/sab/sabproduct.nsf/0/5F0D7DA192ABF2338525798300570D53/$File/SI+report-01.05.12.pdf
