The Environmental Protection Agency announced that under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, 11.1 billion gallons of renewable fuels needed to be blended into transportation gasoline. That's a Renewable Fuels Standard rate of 10.21% compared to the 7.76% standard for 2008.
Under the law, the goal is to use 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2022. EPA is charged with calculating a percentage based standard for the following year by Nov. 30 of each year. That percentage is the minimum volume of renewable fuel each refiner, importer and blender of gasoline must use.
This rule will be published soon in the Federal Register. EPA is also developing rules that will implement additional changes to the RFS mandated by the Energy Independence and Security Act. For more information about EPA rules regarding renewable fuels, click HERE.
