Ten rural utilities and cooperatives in seven states are receiving $223 million in loans to finance new lines and improvements. The funds are provided through the USDA Rural Development Electric Loan Program, which is designed to help improve electric service in rural areas.

"These loans will help expand and maintain access to affordable power by financing improvements for key generation and transmission systems, as well as distribution service to rural electric consumers," acting Ag Secretary Chuck Conner says. "Investment in our nation's electric infrastructure is necessary to help meet our future energy needs."

More than 1,200 miles of new lines will be installed with these funds, 300 miles of existing lines will be repaired and system improvements will be made to benefit more than 15,000 rural electric cooperative members.
