Dry Weather Gives Way to Rain as Planting Season Begins in Argentina

As harvest of corn and soybeans gets into full swing in the United States, Argentine farmers are preparing to plant those crops. Very dry conditions have gripped most growing areas in Argentina for the past several months according to USDA meteorologist Mark Brusberg, but rains have finally arrived.
"We've already seen some delays in corn planting because of some of the lingering effects of the dryness," Brusberg says. "But if it keeps raining they should have very improved conditions for planting."
In spite of the recent weather improvement, the Argentine government is forecasting only 8.4 million acres of corn this year, a drop from about 10 million last year. Soybean planting won't start until next month, but the government is predicting about 44.5 million acres will be planted, an increase of more than 8% over last year.
"They even plan a second, sort of a double crop after the wheat harvest in January," Brusberg says. "So they have a lot of flexibility."
