The market for dry edible beans is being impacted by food assistance to earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Tim Courneya, Executive Vice President of the North Harvest Bean Growers, says the U.S. government has been buying dry beans for its foodaid programs.
"The government did purchase a little over 4,000 tons of beans for Haiti," Courneya said. "Then this week, we just were given another announcement that they were pre-positioning another 6,000 tons. The way it was done, everyone is once again surmising it is being done for Haiti."
Courneya says the 10,000 tons of dry beans is a very significant amount and has helped support the market.
