Deputy USTR's Schwab, Allgeier to Attend OECD Meeting in Paris

USTR leaders plan to use meetings this week with OECD leaders to advance stalled WTO negotiations.

Deputy US Trade Representatives Susan Schwab and Peter Allgeier will lead a US delegation to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development meetings in Paris May 23-24. A statement from USTR's office says they will use these meetings to advance ongoing World Trade Organization negotiations.

"We're in a critical period in the Doha Development Agenda negotiations," says Ambassador Schwab. "We are approaching some key deadlines that must be met for the United States Congress to approve any Doha agreement under Trade Promotion Authority legislation that expires July 1 next year."

The schedule for Paris is still tentative, but Schwab and Allgeier plan to meet with EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson, Kenyan Trade Minister Mukhisha Kituyi, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade Mark Vaile, among other colleagues.

The EU may be prepared to move closer to, but not meet, demands of developing countries to make deeper cuts in its farm tariffs, according to a spokesman for Mandelson. Currently EU's offer provides a 39% cut on the average tariff. The G20 countries want the EU to slash its farm tariffs by an average of 54%.
