Democratic Senators Set Own Agenda

Discretionary spending freeze included by Senate.
Compiled by staff
Published: Feb 23, 2011

Last week, Democrats in the U.S. Senate introduced their revised agenda, championed by Conference Vice Chairman Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. The agenda adopts President Obama's call for a five-year domestic discretionary spending freeze while trumpeting new spending that Democrats argue will create jobs. They agree with the president that the country needs to "out-innovate, out-educate and out-build" the rest of the world.

The 20-item list includes finally passing a long-delayed highway bill, protecting stimulus smart-grid and clean-energy investments from Republican cuts, creating a Clean Energy Deployment Administration, and making the research and development tax credit permanent.

According to Schumer the budget in the House is a road map to disaster. Democrats argue that their new investments in education, energy and highways, coupled with an overall spending freeze, are preferable to deep cuts across the government as proposed by Republicans.

Much as I support ethanol subsidies (and have invested in ethanol myself), I am not ready to endorse more of the same fiscal policies that have bankrupted this great country. It seems that the Dems are "friends" of unions and now "friends" of farmers. I will not be bribed with fiscal irresponsibility by the folks that created this massive deficit. Isn't that the way it always works? Support our wild spending and you can have some, too. This country needs renewable energy and ethanol but these guys should have thought about the consequences before they bailed out GM and Wall Street with the money we need for ethanol which is now at risk, proving the old adage - timing is everything and it has been squandered like the cash it will take to implement it. I have nothing but scorn for the Dems who suddenly bring out ethanol as their poster child while they let this fuel lapse for the past two years and ruined our chances to get flex-fuel cars on the market. Now we just export it and we should export the politicians that did this to our ethanol policy. The window has closed.
