CWT's Export Assistance Program Accepts Bid

More than 200 tons of cheddar cheese will be exported to Middle East.

Herd retirement isn't the only way Cooperatives Working Together helps strengthen and stabilize milk prices by balancing supply with demand. Export assistance is another part of the puzzle - and CWT announced this week it has accepted bids to export more than 420,000 pounds of cheddar cheese to the Middle East and Asia in June and July. CWT has assisted members in making export sales of Cheddar cheese totaling 34.9-million pounds to 17 countries since the Export Assistance program was reactivated on March 18 this year.

The program was reactivated when there were economic indications that cheddar cheese inventories extending into the market hampered recovery in producer milk prices. CWT says providing its members with export assistance offers the most immediate way to positively impact producer milk prices in the short and long-term.

Cooperatives Working Together (CWT) last week accepted four bids from Foremost Farms and six bids from Dairy Farmers of America for export assistance for a total of 2,046 metric tons (4.5 million pounds) of Cheddar cheese to the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Central America. The majority of the product will be delivered April through July 2010, with a quarter of the total quantity to be delivered into October. CWT also announced today that it is expanding the types of cheese varieties eligible for export bonuses to include Gouda, Colby, and Monterey Jack.
