Where you are located has a lot to do with what kind of condition winter wheat is in. According to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey Okalahoma and Texas have been hardest by a lack of rain.
"We've seen very dry conditions since mid-October throughout the southern part of the Plains region," Rippey said. "Some of the southeastern Plains were dry even before that."
This has been the main cause for a high percentage in poor crop conditions in those areas.
"We see 64% of the Texas winter wheat crop rated poor to very poor, that's up from 46% a month ago," Rippey said. "Looking at the same numbers for Oklahoma, 36% poor to very poor, up from 20% a month ago. So we've really seen a rapid deterioration of the wheat crop this winter."
Rippey says that the moisture that the area received a week ago in the form of freezing rain and snow, but the amounts were very light and the impact was not significant in terms of improving the situation in Texas and Oklahoma. However other winter wheat areas, especially Kansas are reporting fair, good and excellent winter wheat conditions.
