Despite rains in the Eastern and Southern Corn Belt last week, dry weather in the Western Corn Belt allowed corn planting to progress, with 73% of the corn crop planted according to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey.
"In the last week obviously we saw 22 points up from last week and in the last two weeks 46% of the corn has been planted," Rippey says. However planting still lags behind the five-year average of 88%, and emergence is substantially behind average at 26% due to cool weather.
But 15% of corn emerged this week and market analyst Arlan Suderman says the U.S. and European weather models are pointing toward favorable weather.
"As we start this week they are starting to come together favoring the European model, which is building up of heat into the Midwest and an area of rain developing over dry areas of the plains late this week," Suderman says. "So overall it looks like it's going to be a favorable weather pattern for wheat that was beginning to suffer again from drought in the Plains and for getting corn and soybeans planted in the Midwest."
