Crop progress report shows that winter wheat is in best shape it's seen in quite awhile.

The first crop progress report for the corn crop was released by USDA Monday and according to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey 3% of the 2010 corn crop has been planted, which is just 1% behind the five-year average. Most of the progress Rippey says is in the South.

"
Texas with almost half of the crop planted at 48%, just behind the five-year average of 61%," Rippey said. "North Carolina is at 34%, ahead of the five-year average of 25%."

Among Midwestern states
Missouri is leading the way with 9% of the corn crop planted, which is slightly behind the five-year average of 16%.

Another crop highlighted in Monday's crop progress report was sugar beets.

"Because of the extremely dry weather that
Michigan has been experiencing much of the late winter and early spring 78% of Michigan's sugar beets are in the ground," Rippey said. "The five-year average is only 13% and that has pushed the national number to 17% planted, more than double the five-year average of 8%."

Rippey says overall winter wheat condition is a very good looking crop compared to historical numbers, with 65% of the crop rated good to excellent, which is much better than last year at this time when only 42% of the crop was rated good to excellent.

"The only real problems we're seeing continue to be primarily in the soft red winter wheat belt," Rippey said. "That is related to problems last fall with late planting and poor establishment."

In
Illinois 30% of the crop is rated very poor to poor, 31% in Missouri, and 20% in North Carolina. However excellent conditions are being seen across the Northwest and the Plains. More than 70% of Oklahoma's crop is rated good to excellent and even Texas, which was having problems earlier in the season, that number is up to 58%. Kansas has 69% of the crop rated in good to excellent condition.
