USDA estimates the U.S. corn harvest is 97% complete in top corn states, but several states in the Great Lakes area are behind historical averages. Nevertheless, thanks to a large crop, corn supply and prices have not been affected by a wet harvest in some areas.
Michigan, normally about 92% finished with corn harvest in early December, has only completed 78% of its corn crop due to wet weather. However, a strong crop has made up for the crops remaining in the field, according to Larry Nobis, a member of the National Corn Growers Association Production and Stewardship Action Team, who calls Michigan's case "a good crop but a poor fall."
"It hasn't made a difference in either the price or supply, because the crop is so big," Nobis says in an NCGA release. "Unless we also have a bad spring, we're not planning to change a thing."
Other slow areas include Ohio at 88%, Pennsylvania at 90% and Indiana at 93%.
