Party line votes prevented the Senate Appropriations Committee from moving the implementation date of country-of-origin labeling on all food products to January 1, 2005. Now the present September 30, 2006 stands at the current implementation date.
Democrats were pushing to move the date forward, saying the U.S. is at a trading disadvantage with many competitors who have similar labeling requirements. R-CALF and other consumer groups have been loud advocates of implementing mandatory country-of-origin labeling.
