Congresswoman Calls for Labels After Latest Recall
Connecticut Senator wants tenderized meat labeled, so consumers will know.

The weekend recall of 248,000 pounds of beef due to E. coli concerns has at least one Congresswoman ready to take action. According to a report by Meatingplace.com, Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., wants to have labels that identify meat that has been mechanically tenderized.
The National Steak and Poultry recall followed a determination by USDA of an association between blade tenderized meat and illnesses in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, South Dakota and Washington.
DeLauro notes that USDA has known about the risks associated with mechanically tenderized meat since 1999. She says the agency should move quickly to require labeling the clearly identify mechanically tenderized beef and pork products for all processing facilities, retailers and consumers.
She contends that with proper labeling, consumers, would know about the processing and be sure they're cooking meat to the appropriate temperature.
