Congressional Leaders Say FTAs Will Pass

Lawmakers says not sending all agreements to Congress makes no sense.

Published: Mar 17, 2011

Key Congressional leaders believe there is support for the pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea. House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., and Trade Subcommittee Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, believe that if the White House agrees to act on all three pending trade agreements, all would pass the House with bipartisan support.

Earlier Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and former United States Trade Representative and current Senator Rob Portman, R-Ohio, also called for the timely consideration of the pending free trade agreements.

The House leaders say  that the White House's refusal to act on all three makes no sense, and their colleagues in the Senate are absolutely right that the time for action on the pending free trade agreements is now.  The longer they are delayed, the more market share U.S. companies lose to foreign competitors and the fewer jobs are created here at home.

Obviously March Madness bracketing is more important than expanding and retaining export markets for agricultural goods. Blame it on Rio - isn't that the latest junket? Wonder if one can monitor the all-important NCAA games from outside the US? That would be alot more meaningful than monitoring the radiation that will hit California tomorrow!
