Congress Takes Up Health Care Debate Quickly

Public sessions shouldn't stop legislation.
Compiled by staff
Published: Sep 9, 2009

The U.S. Senate quickly picked up the discussion of health care reform Tuesday as Congress returned to business on Capitol Hill. Several senators including Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., brought up the hot public sessions on health care that took place across the country during August. Durbin said such discussion is healthy and should be welcomed and that those hot debates are no reason to stop the legislation in Congress.

In the House, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said that while he supports a public option in a health care overhaul bill, he doesn't think its omission should scuttle the top domestic policy priority of President Obama and the Democratic Congress. Even without a public option, Hoyer says emerging health legislation includes much that is very good, moves forward, enhances very substantially accessibility, expands greatly the number of people covered by insurance and provides for very, very broadly supported insurance reforms.
