Confirmation Hearing for Schafer Scheduled

Senate Agriculture Committee will question new ag secretary nominee.
Jason Vance
Published: Jan 14, 2008

Former North Dakota governor Ed Schafer will appear before the Senate Agriculture Committee on Jan. 24 for a conformation hearing on his nomination to become the next Secretary of Agriculture. President Bush nominated Schafer to fill the post after former Ag Secretary Mike Johanns resigned to run for a U.S. Senate seat in Nebraska.

Originally scheduled for Jan. 30, Senator Kent Conrad, D-N.D., asked the committee to move the hearing up so it might be possible for Schafer to attend the State of the Union Address on Jan. 28 as a member of the President's cabinet. The nomination is not controversial, so it is likely he will be quickly confirmed by the full Senate following the hearing.

Schafer's nomination to fill the Ag Secretary position was met with overwhelming support and praise from several agricultural organizations and members of Congress.
