Former North Dakota governor Ed Schafer will appear before the Senate Agriculture Committee on Jan. 24 for a conformation hearing on his nomination to become the next Secretary of Agriculture. President Bush nominated Schafer to fill the post after former Ag Secretary Mike Johanns resigned to run for a U.S. Senate seat in Nebraska.
Originally scheduled for Jan. 30, Senator Kent Conrad, D-N.D., asked the committee to move the hearing up so it might be possible for Schafer to attend the State of the Union Address on Jan. 28 as a member of the President's cabinet. The nomination is not controversial, so it is likely he will be quickly confirmed by the full Senate following the hearing.
