The Presidential Interagency Working Group released an import food safety action plan last week, which according to the group's chair, Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt, will improve ways to assure that food and products imported into the U.S. are safe.

"There are 50 different specific recommendations in 14 categories, all of them revolving around a basic change in strategy," Leavitt says. "This is a big and significant change we are recommending."

Accompanying the action plan is a set of food safety initiatives that were released the same day through the Food and Drug Administration. The FDA initiative will deal with not only imports but also domestic food safety. For more information about these plans, click HERE.
