The Water Resources Development Act moved a step closer to approval this week, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed 14 representatives to a conference committee to work out differences between House and Senate versions of the bill.
"We're pleased Congress is again focusing on WRDA," says National Corn Growers Association President Ken McCauley. "This is an important step, and we hope one of the final ones before passage of this vital bill."
Members of the House Natural Resources Committee also will confer on some sections of WRDA.
The House passed its version of WRDA in April, with an estimated budget of $13.2 billion. The Senate approved its $14 billion version in May. Senate conferees were picked immediately after lawmakers passed WRDA.
The conference committee may meet as early as next week, before Congress departs for its August recess.
