After more that 30 years of federal service, the last 15 as chief economist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Keith Collins is retiring on Jan. 3, 2008.
"Keith Collins has been a cornerstone of the strength of USDA. His distinguished service to agriculture has brought incisive analysis to inform USDA decisions made on behalf of America's farmers and ranchers," acting Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner says. "Keith will be greatly missed by many and I wish him well in retirement."
Deputy Chief Economist Joe Glauber will be named acting Chief Economist. He returns to USDA in December from a temporary assignment to the U.S. Trade Representative's office serving as a Special Doha Agricultural Envoy.
"We are fortunate to have someone as talented as Dr. Glauber ready to assume a more prominent leadership role," Conner says. "Having served as deputy chief economist for 15 years, Joe is well-prepared for the demands of the post and well-respected throughout American agriculture. The valued contributions of both economists are innumerable. USDA has benefited enormously from their insight and analysis."
Glauber is expected to assume duties as acting chief economist in mid-December.
