Last month, China urged the U.S. to improve and investigate export procedures because of quality-related issues for soybeans imported from the United States. That followed reports in the U.S. of unsafe Chinese products.
Huang Hai, assistant minister of commerce told The Public Ledger the government would not interfere in soybean imports, and while there could be a short-term effect on U.S. imports, he says tougher inspection standards should not affect the amount of U.S. soybeans imported.
China has nearly doubled soybean imports in the last four years as the demand for livestock feed has skyrocketed. According to China's custom data, nearly 17 million tons of soybeans were imported by China in the first six months of this year and almost half came from the U.S.
Huang says the government will not restrict they soybean trade and processors will be the ones deciding from where their imports will come.
